I began putting ships into asprin bottles in the late ‘70s whilst serving in the Royal Navy.
A little hobby helps while away the spare hours at sea and away from family.
Miniature furniture followed fairly quickly and it wasn’t long before I started to exhibit
at some of the many Dolls House and Miniatures fairs around the country.
After I left the Navy my time was spent as a cabinet maker occasionally reproducing
older and traditional country furniture.
As time went on I devoted more of my time to the miniatures that I find such joy in
making.
The wood that I use is most commonly fallen timber or wood that has been torn up
by developers etc. Yew, apple, pear and cherry are firm favourites as they take colour well
and with their close grain give the best representation of a full sized piece of furniture.
Finishing a piece very much depends on what it is and what it represents so a variety of techniques
are used. French polish, oil and wax are the most commonly used products.
What ever the item is I try and go the extra distance to make it just that bit more authentic.
I truly believe the customers satisfaction is well worth the added effort in producing a piece
that will be loved and cherished for may years to come.
Wood carving has been a recent addition to the portfolio. House signs, marine, green men,
garden sculpture, ecclesiastical and heraldry are some of the more popular requests from customers.
